A Note on My Process and the Medium - Digital Montage
Although predominantly grounded in my own photographic imagery, the process I use is most accurately described as digital montage - a union of diverse visual elements in a composition the original form of which is a digital file. Working in this medium since 1990, I borrow elements from painting, drawing, photomontage and scanned objects to produce original images. The computer technology I employ both fosters and gives form to visual ambiguities, blurring the boundaries of mixed media and creating altered realities where landscapes and interiors merge in images assembled from a vocabulary of symbols both personal and archetypal. Though at first glance one may be struck by their formality and serenity, these images are charged with undercurrent, both inviting and evoking a response to our understanding of the world and its mystical underpinnings.
